Meanwhile, Julie has also worked extensively in Africa, particularly among vulnerable populations within the countries of Zimbabwe and Zambia. Perhaps most noteworthy have been her efforts in establishing a cooperative for women and orphans affected by HIV/AIDS in Zambia. Julie impacted countless lives by leading efforts in developing microenterprise and microfinance opportunities for hundreds of women in the cooperative. Her work is described in a recent article in the Harvard Gazette.
Brett and Julie are similarly committed to addressing the significant health needs of the world's children through advocating for greater training opportunities in pediatric global health. In partnership with Massachusetts General Hospital, Brett and Julie have helped establish the first pediatric global health fellowship. Brett will begin the fellowship July 2008, and Julie will integrate the fellowship into the remaining years of her pediatric residency in the BCRP.

BCRP residents Brett Nelson and Julie Herlihy have long had strong interests in health care for vulnerable populations in the developing world, and their recent efforts are contributing to the developing academic discipline of pediatric global health.
