The Advocacy Clinic Training (ACT) Project was started in 1999 at Children's Hospital Boston by residents, fellows, and faculty in an effort to improve exposure and training in community medicine and child advocacy. ACT combines experiential learning, individual/group reflection, and resident engagement in advocacy/community based activities. An ACT experience is integrated into the resident's continuity clinic at the Children's Hospital Primary Care Center. Each resident has the opportunity to choose an individual ACT experience in the community, such as visiting a medically complex child and his/her family at home or school, teaching substance abuse prevention to elementary school children, or visiting a legislator at the State House to learn key advocacy skills important at the policy level. This experience replaces one afternoon clinic per year. Residents then have the opportunity to share information and lessons learned from their advocacy experience with their colleagues during pre-clinic conference and in a reflective survey. In addition, the ACT team sponsors a variety of advocacy related events, including noon conferences, pre-clinic conference sessions, the Voter Registration Project, and Resident and Fellow Day at the Statehouse in association with the Mass General.
