First Year, PL-1 |
|
The PL-1 (intern) year concentrates on general pediatrics. The year is structured to provide a broad core foundation of knowledge and the confidence to rise to independent and supervisory positions later in the residency. Interns are exposed to the full range of pediatric illness in both inpatient and outpatient services. Outpatient experiences include a weekly continuity clinic in general pediatrics where interns begin to build their personal patient populations. Interns rotate through the inpatient wards, on geographically-based teams that care for both general pediatric and subspecialty patients. They also rotate through the neonatal intensive care units, the newborn nurseries and the emergency department at both Children's and BMC, as well as the Children's inpatient cardiology service. They gain knowledge of both child development and adolescent medicine during four-week rotations involving clinical and community experiences. Interns in both tracks also spend 1-2 months on subspecialty services (clinics and inpatient consults) such as Endocrinology, Allergy/Immunology/
Rheumatology, Neurology, Hematology, Nephrology, and Pulmonology. The only difference between the tracks in the intern year is that Primary Care track residents have a two-week primary care block with enhanced exposure to community resources such as legal and housing support, as well as local and state advocacy programs. They also have slightly more Nursery time. Interns are supervised by senior residents and faculty on all rotations.
