The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Children's Hospital Boston are developing a global health initiative that will integrate program building, education, and research in pediatric oncology in developing countries. Residents are encouraged to become involved in projects during their pediatric training. There are currently three regional initiatives, with different models of intervention for expanded access to pediatric cancer care and control in developing countries:
- Development of advanced pediatric oncology units and regionalization of resources and expertise in middle-income countries, though a collaboration with the Children's Cancer Hospital 57357 in Cairo, Egypt.
- Development of pediatric cancer care and control systems in low-income countries, through a collaboration with the cooperative network of pediatric oncologists in Central America and the Dominican Republic (AHOPCA).
- Development of pediatric cancer care and control systems in very-low income countries, through a collaboration with Paul Farmer's program, Partners in Health, in Haiti and Rwanda, and with the International Network for Cancer Treatment and Research (INCTR) in Ethiopia. Development of a newborn screening program for Sickle Cell disease and the establishment of a Sickle Cell disease clinic in Liberia, is also underway, in collaboration with the HEARTT program.
