Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth are a population that faces unique needs and issues. They may have low-self esteem due to negative social attitudes and social ostracism caused by their sexual orientation. They may lack positive role models for healthy dating relationships and may lack prevention-oriented peer support targeted towards their population. All of these factors may contribute to their increased likelihood to engage in risky sexual and drug-using behaviors. They are also more likely to become depressed and suicidal. Some youth are at an increased risk for acquiring HIV.
