The outer one-third of the ear canal is cartilaginous and contains hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and cerumen glands. Bacterial infections of these glands may cause moderate ear discomfort. Treatment includes a thorough cleansing of the outer ear canal and antibiotic therapy.
