Programs that treat this condition
 General Otolaryngology Program
Sudden severe pain with hearing loss and ringing in the ears may occur after an airline flight or scuba diving and indicates a pressure-related trauma to the middle ear. Barotrauma is caused by the inability of the Eustachian tube to equilibrate a sudden air pressure difference between the environment and the middle ear space. Treatment is largely supportive with analgesics for the ear pain.
