Overview
"Overweight" vs. "obese"
"Overweight" and "obese" are not the same. Being overweight may put a child at risk for obesity, and obesity is a serious, chronic disease that can inflict substantial harm to the child's health and well-being. Together, overweight and obesity represent the second leading preventable cause of death in the United States.
Facts about obesity
- The U.S. Surgeon General has declared that overweight and obesity have reached epidemic proportions in this country.
- More than nine million children between the ages of 6 and 19 are overweight.
- One out of three children are estimated to be overweight or obese.
