 Voiding Improvement Program    Vesicoureteral Reflux
Are you going to have some special x-rays called VCUG done soon? This information will tell you a little bit about them so you'll know what's going on.
What does VCUG mean?
VCUG stands for "voiding cystourethrography."
What do I need to do ahead of time?
This test is done early in the morning in the Radiology Department of Children's Hospital Boston. During the VCUG the doctor will take some pictures of your bladder. There is nothing special you have to do ahead of time to prepare for this test.
What will happen at the hospital?
After you have gone to the bathroom, the technologist will bring you into a large room where you will see a big machine over a high metal table. This machine is just an overgrown camera which is hooked up to a TV screen where you, your parents and your doctor can watch your bladder. You will also see a bottle full of clear liquid called contrast material hung on a pole at the end of the table; a thin plastic tube called a catheter will be connected to this bottle.

First the technologist will ask you to climb up on the table, lie down on your back, and slide off your underpants. Then after putting on rubber gloves to keep you as clean as possible, he or she will wash your penis very carefully with several pieces of cotton dipped in warm, pink colored soap. This is to make the area super clean, so until the end of the test you shouldn't touch anything below your belly button. Then the doctor or technologist will wash off the soap with warm water and will put a very clean small blue cloth over you. The doctor will be touching your penis and this may feel a little funny, but this test is a real quick one and the more you relax the easier it will be. The doctor might squirt some stuff into your penis with a kind of water pistol so that you will not feel anything. After a few minutes the doctor will gently slide the catheter a little ways into your penis and loosely tape it to you so that it doesn't come out during the test.

Then the doctor will slowly let the liquid from the bottle flow through the tube and into your bladder. You will be able to watch your bladder fill up on the TV screen. As your bladder is filling, you will feel like you have to go to the bathroom. When you don't think you can hold another drop, tell the technologist and doctor. They will tell you to hold it for just a few more seconds while they take a couple of pictures. Then the technologist will give you a container to go to the bathroom in while you are still lying on the table; as you are going the plastic tube will slide out and the doctor will take some more pictures of your bladder emptying. When a picture is being taken, you must lie very still so that the film doesn't come out blurry.

What happens after the study is done?
After all the pictures have been taken, you're done! The technologist will wipe off any contrast material that has spilled on you during the test so you can put your underpants back on and go outside to wait for a few minutes while the pictures are being developed. This is a real service since your parents often have to wait several days to have their photographs developed!

P.S. If it stings the next couple of times you go to the bathroom, don't worry, it will go away soon.
