White Blood Cell Disorders

 White Blood Cell (WBC) Disorders  
White blood cells are the components of blood that help the body fight infection. Non-malignant white blood cell disorders include:
  • Low white blood cell count and neutropenia (low levels of neutrophils in the blood). Examples include:
    • benign neutropenia of childhood
    • familial neutropenia
    • autoimmune neutropenia
    • Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome
    • Kostmann syndrome (severe congenital neutropenia)
    • toxic effects of some prescription medications

  • High white blood cell count

  • White blood cells that do not function properly, leading to risk of infection. Examples include:
    • chronic granulomatous disease (CGD)
    • leukocyte adhesion deficiency
    • myeloperoxidasae deficiency
    • Chediak Higashi syndrome
