Breastfeeding:
Plugged milk ducts
Disease Information
Overview
Plugged ducts are tender lumps in the breast that usually occur if you go too long without emptying your breasts, or if insufficient milk is removed during feedings. They can be easily treated by:
- breastfeeding or pumping often
- alternating different feeding positions
- applying warm compresses to the area affected
- soaking your breast in warm water
- massage above and than over the affected area when breastfeeding or pumping, and after applying warm compresses or soaking
