Ovarian failure is the term used when the ovaries are no longer able to make hormones or eggs. Ovarian failure usually occurs late in life, but adolescents may develop premature ovarian failure if they have been exposed to chemotherapy and/or radiation for cancer treatment, if they have a genetic problem such as Turner Syndrome, a metabolic problem such as galactosemia, or for unknown reasons. What are the symptoms of ovarian failure? The symptoms that occur with ovarian failure include a lack of menstrual periods, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, mood swings, and insomnia. However, most adolescents with ovarian failure notice only a lack of development, or a lack of menstrual periods. These symptoms are the result of a decline in the production of the hormone estrogen from the ovaries.
