Both males and females can have hormonal imbalances. For example, females may have too much testosterone, which can cause problems such as excessive hair. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormone imbalance than can affect girls, causing irregular periods, acne, and excessive hair growth. Both boys and girls can have too much or too little thyroid hormone, cortisol, insulin, and other hormones.
