What to Screen
AAP guidelines suggest using an autism-specific tool at 18 and 24 months and a developmental screener at 9, 18 and 30 months.
At BCH, we chose to use an autism screener at both the 18 and 24 month well child visit and use a developmental screener at every well child visit from 6 months through 5 years for several reasons:
- Our high (20-30%) no-show rate - we wanted the opportunity to screen as often as was reasonable.
- Given our large training program, we wanted to adhere as closely as possible to established guidelines.
- Our state Medicaid adopted a regulation regarding routine behavioral health screening at every well child visit and the MCHAT at 18 and 24 months satisfied their requirement at those visits.
So far, this decision has worked well for us. You may choose a different schedule for reasons specific to your practice.
