Sumiko Mekaru

Sumiko Mekaru is a research associate with the HealthMap research group. She draws on her experience as a veterinarian and epidemiologist to bring both clinical experience and deep training in analytic methods to innovating new techniques for infectious disease surveillance, modeling, and prediction Previously, she oversaw operations for HealthMap.

Sumiko Mekaru’s research has focused on novel methods for infectious disease surveillance. She has coauthored numerous peer-reviewed articles on outbreaks, infectious disease, and innovative surveillance techniques. Her doctoral work examined the role of environmental risk factors in Ebola, Lyme disease, and drinking water-associated outbreaks.

Sumiko Mekaru received her DVM from the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. After practicing at a small animal hospital, she received a Master of Preventive Veterinary Medicine from UC Davis and a PhD in epidemiology from Boston University.
