About Us:
Our Voices
Image In the Center for Families, our commitment to diversity is found less in the programs we offer than in the personal relationships we create. Our effectiveness as caregivers depends on taking the time to learn how and why people are different and how this affects their understanding of wellbeing, illness and recovery.

-- Cecilia Matos
Patient Family Educator in the Center for Families

Image We make ourselves available to every patient family in their own religious tradition. Sometimes a prayer is a warm hug or a cup of coffee. Other times it's praying with a family in their native language.

-- Sister Carlotta Gilarde, CSJ
Chaplain

Image The prevalence of asthma is higher in Black Americans and in inner city populations, but it affects people of all socioeconomic backgrounds. It has increased dramatically in prevalence over the last two decades, doubling in children over this period of time.

-- Dale Umetsu, PhD
Asthma Researcher

Image We can't just stay within our walls if we want to improve the health of children. Children's is in the community, working with health centers, schools and other neighborhood groups to address health issues. We are combining our medical expertise with the knowledge and experience of our community partners to ensure that children have access to the kind of care they need, where they need it and when they need it.

-- Shari Nethersole, MD
Medical Director for Community Health

Image As an African American physician, I always feared two things: That I would be held back because of the color of my skin or that I would be advanced because of the color of my skin. I am grateful that at Children's, I've always been promoted because of the content of my character and my skills as a physician.

-- Michael Shannon, MD
Chief of Emergency Medicine,
and First African-American Professor
of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School

Image Children's has a unique culture that embraces the diversity of gay and lesbian employees in many ways -- from providing health insurance benefits for same-sex couples to marching in Boston's Gay Pride parade.

-- Todd Katzman
Department Administrator for Surgery

Image At Children's, it's like the world comes to you because children from virtually every country walk through these doors. The culture is diverse and collaborative, and everything centers around our patients and their families.

-- Brenda Suatengco, RN
Neuroscience

Image The 2000 U.S. Census found that the population of non-Whites is growing seven times faster than the population as a whole. As a result, the United States is no longer best described as a melting pot, but rather as a mosaic, with a rich blend of cultures, each contributing to the whole while retaining its distinctive qualities. In this changing world, if organizations are to meet the needs of their customers, they must promote respect for and value differences.

-- Elvira Paulino
Director of Diversity and Co-chair
of the Diversity and Cultural Competency Council

As the busiest pediatric acupuncture clinic in the country, we at Children's are witness to the importance of complementary and alternative medicine. We now provide more than 1,500 acupuncture treatments per year for post-operative pain, chronic pain and illnesses. More and more families are taking advantage of the relief acupuncture offers.

-- Yuan-Chi Lin, MD
Director of the Medical Acupuncture Service in Perioperative and Pain Medicine

Children's Hospital Boston recognizes the importance of creating a safe environment for adolescents questioning sexuality. The Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine offers national and local training workshops for providers around health issues faced by gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender patients.
