Directed Donation |

This program is optional. Parents are under no obligation to provide blood for their children. Parents wishing to institute a directed donation program must do so by calling 617-355-6677. Patients undergoing cardiac surgery require blood products that are no more than seven days old. The Blood Donor Center will want to know how many units of blood will be requested for your child's operation.

- Directed donation appointments are scheduled:
- Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Fridays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Directed blood donations should be made at least three business days prior to the scheduled surgery/transfusion, but no more than 21 days prior to the procedure.
- There is no evidence that directed blood donations are safer than blood from the volunteer bank.
- Directed donors must have appointments.
- The Blood Donor Center does not type or screen for compatibility in advance.
