Flower Our City
Image It is estimated that by 2040, the majority of all Americans will belong to groups that we now call "minorities."

Today, Boston is a "majority minority" city. More than 51 percent of the city's population is made up of Latinos, Blacks and Asians and three-quarters of children are minorities.*

Children's Hospital Boston's patients, families and staff reflect this new and culturally rich reality. In 2005, 70 percent of our inpatients from the Boston metropolitan area were Black/African American, Hispanic or Asian/Pacific Islander. As one of the top pediatric hospitals and the leading center of pediatric medical research in the world, Children's is a beacon for families of every imaginable race, ethnicity and religion.

Honoring and recognizing diversity in our city
A commitment to honoring and recognizing diversity is a core value of the hospital and central to our continued ability to provide the best medical care to all children. As part of our commitment, Children's launched the new Diversity and Cultural Competency Council with a broader mission in July 2006. The new council is working to:
  • Provide leadership in defining the diversity and cultural competency goals for Children's
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of diversity and cultural competency initiatives
  • Report progress and outcomes to senior management and hospital personnel
