Dear Brookline Neighbors,
The leadership of Children's Hospital Boston is excited about the opportunity to develop '2-4 Brookline Place' into an attractive and vibrant building in the Brookline Village neighborhood. I, myself, am a resident of Brookline and 1,000 employees at Children's also live in the Town. We appreciate the beautiful tree-lined streets and many parks, the diverse culture, the many eating and entertainment opportunities, the superior schools and easy access to the public transportation system.
The development of Brookline Place has been planned in concert with the planning guidelines and principals of the Gateway East plans. The purpose of the Gateway East project, creation of a improved entryway into the Town, enhanced pedestrian connections and better vehicular flow through this area, is furthered by our plans that include the creation of open green space and pedestrian oriented plazas along Route 9 and Pearl Street, and improved pedestrian links from Brookline Village to the Emerald Necklace. In addition, the ground floor retail areas will provide an opportunity for new shops and restaurants to enliven the Brookline Place public plaza.
Currently, we expect over 600 Children's employees will work in the building, providing necessary administrative support to the hospital and 'world class' outpatient care to our patients. We expect our employees and patient families to eat, shop and use the many services provided by local merchants in Brookline Village. We also know the use of the building will increase the flow of traffic around the site and we are exploring all possibilities to minimize this impact along Brookline Avenue, Pearl Street and Washington Street (Route 9) in particular.
Children's is a wonderful organization with a unique mission. I encourage you to get to know us, if you don't already. In Brookline, 87 percent of the kids who need emergency care every year come to our emergency room, and 77 percent of those who require hospitalization also come here. We are your family's children's hospital.
We appreciate your patience as we plan, permit and construct our new building and look forward to occupying our new location in Brookline.
Sincerely,
James Mandell, MD
