Fitness in the City:
Making better nutrition and physical activity accessible for Boston families.

More than 700 Boston children, who are overweight or obese, participate in Children's Hospital Boston's Fitness in the City Program (FIC). The outcomes show that this 6 year-old program is making a difference. Children participating in the program spend less time watching TV, consume less sugar-sweetened beverages and eat more fruits and vegetables. Program outcomes also show a significant number of children in FIC have decreased or maintained their Body Mass Index (see chart below).
Children's support for the 11 participating Boston community health centers, including our own Martha Eliot, has allowed the sites to enhance their programming and hire case managers to help families access nutrition education and community-based physical activities. Case managers also monitor patients to help them reach their goals for exercise and healthful eating. More than 20 providers and staff from the FIC sites meet bimonthly to share ideas and work together to address obesity in their community.
