Boston Children’s Hospital shares our referring physicians’ concerns about the climbing costs of health care—and the resulting impact on both their practices and the patients and families they serve.

In fact, Boston Children’s is the only pediatric institution taking aggressive steps to reshape the market by lowering costs over the long term:

Over the past three years, Boston Children’s has held our expenses to well below medical inflation, taking approximately $170 million out of the health care system.

We are leading the charge to reduce costs by integrating primary and specialty care—promoting community capacity, empowering primary care physicians and upholding exceptional care standards across the board.

In particular, Boston Children’s is supporting the goals of primary care physicians by:

Implementing a patient-centered medical home model by developing a new portal, MyPatients@Boston Children’s, that will allow referring physicians to securely access all of their patients’ essential information online

Lowering prices at our satellite locations, ensuring that patients are treated in more affordable, more convenient settings whenever appropriate

Introducing programs to make certain that, when patients do need to come to Boston Children’s for treatment, they receive the highest-quality care.

Boston Children’s Standardized Clinical Assessment and Management Plans (SCAMPs) initiative, a national model, analyzes data about clinical decisions and uses the information to refine standards of care.

We are establishing a Center of Excellence for Quality Measurement that will establish key measures for evaluating and advancing pediatric care delivery.

The future of pediatrics will be forged by thinking differently, breaking paradigms and joining together in a shared vision of tackling the toughest challenges before us.”
