This full day seminar covered fundamentals of evaluation and management for pediatric voice, resonance, and airway disorders. The program highlighted the benefits of a multidisciplinary approach to care, a full range of assessment tools from high tech to no tech, and management considerations. Case presentations were used to detail specialized voice therapy techniques used with children across a variety of disorders and ages.

Pediatric Tracheostomy: Challenges of Specialized Clinical Care

Children with tracheostomies present as a diverse population and pose challenges for service providers.  This seminar familiarized participants with a medical perspective on tracheostomy in children and specialized care and treatment by the speech-language pathologist and respiratory therapist.  The presenters represented a multidisciplinary group including a pediatric otolaryngologist, respiratory therapist, and speech-language pathologists with specialization in the areas of feeding/swallowing, voice, and augmentative communication.  Case presentations were used to provide specific information around clinical practice for children with tracheostomies and use of evidence based practices.

Pediatric Velopharyngeal Insufficiency: Assessment and Management

This half-day seminar focused on the evaluation and treatment for children with disorders of velopharyngeal closure.  We discussed clinical presentation of velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI), techniques of clinical assessment, and objective measures that are clinically useful.  Topics included the application of a VPI rating scale, use of nasometry,  nasopharyngoscopy, as well as videofluoroscopy.  Children with a history of cleft palate, submucosal cleft palate, short palate length, and other disorders at risk for VPI provided case examples for discussion.  Speech therapy for this group of patients as well as surgical approaches were covered.

Pediatric Voice Disorders: Evaluation and Therapy

This half-day seminar focused on evaluation and treatment for children with voice disorders.  We discussed diagnosis and related voice problems in the pediatric population, ranging from frequently encountered vocal fold nodules, less common problems, including muscle tension dysphonia, paresis, etc., and children with complex medical conditions.  Attending clinicians learnt about a whole system approach to voice evaluation, recurring vocal findings across diagnosis, medical management, and specific voice therapy approaches for the children with voice disorders.
